For once I ordered the retail version of a hard drive instead of the OEM version, based solely on the comments about Amazon’s poor packaging of OEM drives. I had no issues with how Amazon packaged this drive. They used air pillows, but it was packed tight enough everything appeared to be fine.
I have no complaints about the drive itself. So far it’s running fine. This is my second WD20EADS drive, and it has been installed in a desktop, the previous (OEM drive from Newegg) is running in a HP Home Server with no issues to date. I have numerous other WD green drives (about 8 in different systems, various drive models including the WD10EADS and the older WD10EACS), and none have so far failed on me.
I was, however, surprised to find no SATA cable in this retail box. I was under the assumption that one of the reasons to buy a retail vs. an OEM drive would be the inclusion of a cable. Not so here. Inside the retail box was the drive, screws, and documentation, that was it. The box itself states that SATA cable is a separate purchase. Fortunately I have an adequate supply of spare cables.

The HDD installed in the Mac Mini has very small capacity. 120GB is hardly enough even for your daily usage, once you have enough photos, videos, and songs. If you buy the cheapest Mac Mini and upgrade the disc space with this drive, it actually costs much less than you buy one with a the same capacity HDD (Go ahead and do your math ^^). The simple instruction is posted on Youtube (search for Mac Mini drive upgrade), which you can easily follow. When you buy this HDD, don’t forget to buy any tool you might need, such as a puddy knife which enables you to open the cover of the Mac Mini without scratching your precious Mac Mini, and a long small magnetic-tipped screw driver set (you will know why they are recommended once you try this upgrade.). Details are included in the beginning of the aforementioned video. Good luck!!

I put three of these drives into my new MacPro4.1 with Snow Leopard (Quad-Core Intel Xexon 2.66 GHz). The hardware install was so easy, fast and simple I was amazed. Turned it on and everything worked. No problems. Quiet and cool.

This “retail” kit does NOT come with an SATA cable, dispite notes otherwise! Also, it was so poorly packaged that the box was rattling around inside of the shipping box.

After reading some of the problems others were experiencing with their high capacity drives, I was nervous about my purchase. My hard drive was instantly recognized by my Macbook pro and I did a time machine back up with it of about 450 GB without any problems. I have only had it for a couple of days but so far so good.
